Next trip plans

  • Liam would like to go somewhere autumnal, like Dunkeld & Birnam or the Borders to make the most of the season.
  • Mable raised a concern about Dunkeld & Birnam in that it would cost over £20. It wouldn't make sense to do an expensive/>£20 trip early in the year, particularly as we had just advertised about focusing on <£20 trips. Other committee members agreed.
  • Linlithgow was noted as another option. Will mentioned North Berwick too, but that he regarded it as more of a summery location.
  • The date of the next trip was decided to be 18 October 2025 and that it would be a hop-on hop-off trip of the Borders line, ending up in Melrose, and demonstrating journey breaks as part of off-peak return tickets.
  • We will break the journey in Stowe, then continue on to Tweedbank, then take a walk along the river to Melrose for the afternoon and head back on the other side of the river.

Advance tickets for trip

  • The committee noted the potential of Advance tickets for enabling the society to reach further-away destinations with a bit more planning.
  • Will raised a concern about the flexibility with off-peak returns that would be lost with Advance tickets. It is a 'feature' of RailSoc trips that we don't have a concrete plan in terms of train times and can be flexible on the day.
  • The committee decided that it could be a viable option, but that it would be revisited later in the academic year as it wasn't necessary for any upcoming trips in the near future.

Committee member limits

  • Following an update to the constitution passed at the Autumn 2025 EGM, the committee noted it could choose to set a limit on the number of non-executive committee members.
  • Liam noted that the committee has had around seven or eight members for some time now, but that he and Morgan would be leaving at the end of the academic year. This would make room for new members.
  • The committee agreed in principle to limit the number of committee members, to four general committee, plus a Welfare Officer and Executive Officers. This will be formally revisited and ratified before the 2026 AGM.

Socials

  • George wanted to put together an event for Halloween. Potentially booking a place in a pub. If people want to get food and drink then they can and it is a nicer environment for socialising.
  • George was happy to take on responsibility for socials.
  • No date was decided but if such an event did happen it would be on the 30th or 1st.
  • The meeting ends at 18:01.
