RailSoc: Games 26th & PERTH 29th November

Hey there, Seb here!

I hope you’ve been enjoying a successful November so far. If you’re new to Edinburgh, I hope the (very) early sunsets and (many) cloudy days of late haven’t caught you off guard. I promise the sun returns. Not anytime soon, mind. But eventually. Okay fine, I'm exaggerating a little bit. But I think I’d need a break too if I was shining all the time. Perhaps more importantly... another month means another instalment of the RailSoc newsletter. A social, a trip, and a model rail update; there's plenty to talk about!

Trip to Perth — 29th November

It feels like it was just a few weeks ago that we made the first trip of the academic year. I am however reliably informed (by my calendar. Does having a physical calendar make you old?) that this was in fact two months ago, and the semester is already drawing to a close. Oh but this cannot be! Not without one more trip, at least. Then I’ll be quite glad for the semester to be over, really.

So, I’m excited to tell you that RailSoc will be headed to the lovely little city of Perth next Saturday. Located along the River Tay, it's slightly further afield compared to our other trips this year, but it should make for a good day out and a nice way to conclude the semester. There's plenty to see and do, from museums and galleries to kirks and cathedrals. Plus Spoons. That's always good.

Please do join us on Saturday, 29 November if you can make it — it would be great to see you! We’ll be meeting at our regular spot on the Edinburgh Waverley concourse (the big pole between Costa and Pret) at about 09:30. We’ll then catch the 10:03 train. Day return tickets will cost £14.90 with a Railcard and £22.40 without, and purchased online or from the station on the day. As always, there'll be committee on hand to help.

Australia sure looks cold

I hope to see you there! In the meantime though, I'll hand over to our president Liam.

RAILSOC SOCIAL! - 26th November

About time really - all societies need socials, and this one is a classic: everyone likes board games don't they!

This Social is a little bit unique though, and that is that I am combining it this week with the Model Railway session (oooh). This way we get to be a bit fun and show off the progress we've made on our lovely railway (and get increased attendance)!

That means there will not be a Monday session for the Model Railway, instead we are switching our landscaping and ballasting to Wednesday!

But it does mean everyone gets to enjoy socialising with our fellow railfans and playing some transport themed board games and/or crafts :) Don't be afraid to bring your own games too!

We will be meeting in Pleasance at 19:00 on Wednesday the 26th - our room is to be confirmed!

Do you like answering questions?

We had a student reach out to us about a study they're running (a proper one), investigating the link between hobbies and personalities. If you'd like to participate, you can fill out the anonymous questionnaire linked below. No pressure!

The following is a research opportunity which aims to investigate the association between people’s leisure activities and their personality. We know that there are so many options for fun things you can do, but no scientific resources can help you in deciding what to try first.

This research is a step toward a long-term goal that could develop an application to compare your personality against those which are typical in certain hobbies, allowing you to find hobbies that might be a good fit based on your personality.

This study is a simple 10-15 minute questionnaire which will ask you about your favourite leisure activities and then a personality questionnaire. More information exists on the Participation Information Sheet within the questionnaire itself. If you have any questions you may contact me via email ([email protected]).

That's all for now, but we hope to see you next week for our trip to Perth! Best of luck with the end of the semester, and all the final assignments and exams you might have.

Until next time,

Seb (Secretary) and Liam (President)
